Prof. Yossi Buganim: Short bio
Yosef (Yossi) Buganim is an HHMI International Research Scholar and associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his undergraduate degrees from Bar-Ilan University and his Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science. Buganim completed his postdoctoral training in stem cell biology and nuclear reprogramming at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, MIT.
Buganim was the first to generate iPSCs without using Yamanaka’s factors and to identify a late deterministic phase during reprogramming. His research group is pioneering the field of cellular reprogramming/conversion and demonstrated the induction of all three early embryo stem cell types from skin cells.
Buganim's work has earned him numerous prestigious international grants and awards, including the HHMI Award, ERC-StG Grant, EMBO-YIP Award, the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Award from Science and Science Translational Medicine magazines, the KY Cha Award for Stem Cell Technology from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Krill Prize from the Wolf Foundation, among others.
A bit about the Buganim lab
The Buganim lab specializes in utilizing stem cell biology and cutting-edge nuclear reprogramming technologies to advance the field of Regenerative Medicine. By transforming skin fibroblasts into clinically valuable cell types, we aim to provide new avenues for treating devastating human diseases. Additionally, we are dedicated to unraveling the intricate processes underlying cell fate decisions during embryonic development and elucidating the critical elements that govern stemness.
